Work

Research Associate (UNSW)

Joining the group of Professor Dane McCamey, the Research Associate will work in the UNSW node of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Exciton Science and use spin and optical spectroscopic approaches to understand the formation, transport, transformation, interaction and recombination of excitons in organic, inorganic and hybrid materials and devices.

The Research Associate will work in a highly collaborative research environment which will require developing and maintaining strong links within the UNSW Node and with research groups across ACEx (University of Melbourne, Monash, Sydney and RMIT).

About the role

  • $100K - $107K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 18 months
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role of Research Associate reports to Professor Dane McCamey (School of Physics) and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Ensure research is carried out in line with the project’s aims.
  • Investigate excitons in organic, inorganic and hybrid materials and devices via advanced spin based spectroscopic methods (eg pulsed EPR).
  • Prepare oxygen-sensitive optoelectronic materials and devices.
  • Perform optical measurements where required.
  • Collaborate with organic chemists to develop and obtain new materials.
  • Keep detailed laboratory notes describing all experiments undertaken.
  • Contribute to and draft papers for publication reporting on original research undertaken in the area of exciton science.
  • Undertake interstate and international travel for collaborative visits.
  • Work to maintain a culture which supports high quality research in the UNSW Node of ACEx.
  • Assist with the supervision of research students in the research area where required.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

Selection Criteria

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A PhD (or soon to be awarded) in Physics or an allied discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in spin physics and spin-based spectroscopy (e.g. pulsed EPR).
  • Demonstrated experience in characterisation of organic optoelectronic materials and devices.
  • Demonstrated experience in fabrication of devices from oxygen sensitive materials, particularly in an inert environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of experimental apparatus.
  • Demonstrated experience in data analysis and scientific communication.
  • Demonstrated capability to produce high quality research publications.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a research team and to contribute to the broader intellectual environment of the School of Physics.
  • Experience with python or equivalent programming experience is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

You should systematically address the selection criteria listed within the position description in your application.
